Modern agriculture is rapidly expanding beyond traditional crop and livestock farming into high-yield, climate-smart agribusiness enterprises. Trainees from the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Studies at Machakos Town Technical and Vocational College took to the field today for an intensive, hands-on practical session in commercial aquaculture production.
Under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, the class moved through the crucial technical stages required to establish and commission a high-efficiency fish pond from scratch:
- HDPE Pond Liner Installation: Laying and securing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners to guarantee total water retention, eliminate soil seepage, and extend the lifespan of the pond infrastructure.
- Controlled Water Inflow & Management: Regulating water volume, monitoring aeration parameters, and ensuring proper depth controls.
- Biological Pond Fertilization: Formulating and applying balanced nutrients to stimulate the natural bloom of phytoplankton and zooplankton—establishing an abundant, natural food ecosystem for fish fingerlings prior to stocking.
