At Machakos Town Technical and Vocational College, weβve made a major upgrade to how we teach. Itβs called modularization, and itβs all about giving you more flexibility, practical skills, and a clear path to employment.
π So, what is modular training?
Instead of taking a big course all at once, your learning is now broken down into smaller parts called modules. Each module teaches you one set of important skills. Once you finish a module, you can move on to the next, or even go straight into industrial training or work. A module for lasts THREE MONTHS.
π How does the progression work?
Hereβs how it looks in practice:
1. Start at the Artisan Level
You begin with basic, hands-on skills β perfect for beginners.
β Example module: Food Handling and Processing Techniques
Once you finish this, you can:
- Join industrial training
- Get certified
- Enter the workforce or move on to the next level
2. Move up to the Craft Level
Here you build on what you learned with more technical and supervisory skills.
β Example module: Baking and Fermentation Technology
After this:
- You can take part in a second industrial training
- Get a Craft Certificate
- Start applying for more advanced jobs
3. Advance to the Diploma Level
This is where you specialize, lead teams, or even start your own business.
β Example modules: Product Development, Quality Assurance, Entrepreneurship
After completing these:
- You graduate with a full Diploma
- Youβre ready for high-skill jobs or further education
πΌ Why is this great for you?
- More Flexible: Learn at your own pace and pause or continue when life changes.
- More Practical: Every module focuses on real industry needs.
- More Opportunities: Start working after just one level β and come back anytime to grow further.
- More Recognition: You get a certificate after each level, showing real progress and skill.
π¨βπ³ Example: Food Processing Technology Program
Letβs say you want a career in food manufacturing. Hereβs how you could progress:
- Artisan: Learn how to handle food safely and process basic products.
- Craft: Train in baking, dairy, or meat processing β then go on an industrial training.
- Diploma: Learn how to create new products, manage quality, and run a food business.
Each level is a building block, and at the end of every stage, you can earn a certificate and enter the job market.

π Entry Requirements and How You Progress
With our new modular system, getting started is simple, and your KCPE or KCSE results no longer limit your future.
β‘οΈ All students now begin at Module 1, which is Level 3, no matter what grades they received in school.
Hereβs how it works:
- Module 1 (Level 3): Everyone starts here. After completing it:
- If you only sat for KCPE, you will go for industrial training before continuing.
- If you have done KCSE, you can move directly to Module 2 once you pass Module 1 β no industrial training needed.
- Module 2 (Level 4 β Artisan Level):
- If you only had KCPE, you can return after you train to take Module 2.
- After finishing Module 2:
- If you scored a Dβ or E in KCSE, you must do industrial training before continuing.
- If you scored D, D+, Cβ, C or higher, you can move directly to Module 3 β no training required.
- Module 3 (Start of Level 5 β Craft Certificate):
- This is the first half of your Craft Certificate.
- Module 4 (Second half of Level 5):
- After completing Module 4, all students must go for industrial training, no matter their background.
- At this point, you will have completed your Craft Certificate (Level 5).
- Want to go further? You can now choose to continue to Diploma Level (Level 6):
- Take Modules 5, 6, and 7 to complete your diploma.
- After that, all trainees go for industrial training again to finish their Diploma qualification.
Whether you want to start working quickly or aim for a full diploma, modular training gives you the power to choose your path.
