Agriculture Students Establish Tree Nursery for Greening Campaign 🌱

🗓️ June 12th, 2025

Our dedicated Agriculture trainees at Machakos Town Technical and Vocational College were busy with an important hands-on project: establishing a new tree nursery. This initiative is a vital step in our commitment to environmental sustainability.

The students learned practical skills by sowing smaller Senna siamea seeds and directly planting larger Croton megalocarpus seeds into polythene sleeves. Their hard work paid off, with 500 pots filled on the first day alone. The goal is to produce at least 10,000 seedlings for the upcoming rainy season, with the first nursery bed expected to yield approximately 5,000 seedlings. Preparation for a second bed is already underway!

These seedlings won’t just benefit the college; they will also be a valuable resource for the wider community. We plan to donate them to neighboring schools, organizations, and churches, expanding our “green footprint” beyond the campus. The project also received expert guidance from Mrs. Khadija Mkambe, an officer from the Kenya Forest Service at Muumandu Forest, who provided valuable technical advice.

This effort aligns perfectly with national initiatives like the Greening Kenya Campaign and demonstrates our dedication to fostering environmentally conscious graduates. We are proud to partner with organizations that share our vision for a greener, more sustainable future.
